How to make an Admin button for a module like below:

Please read on..

Require:

photoshop(I use photoshop7.0)

the Blank Admin button

the source icon

Process:
step 1
select the area from the source icon
Resized Image

step 2
apply the feather in the source icon
Resized Image

step3
copy icon layer to the the Blank Admin button
Resized Image

step4
move the icon layer
Resized Image

step5
change the layer options from the 'Normal' to the 'Luminosity'
Resized Image

step6
insert the button text to a layer
Resized Image

And if you want to have the original font i used to create these icons, you should search for Bit3.

You can get this font e.g. on this german site:

DesignerInAction

Click on "WIN: TTF" below the Bit3 font. After that click on "Akzeptiert - weiter zum Download!".

Also, if you don't want the "glow" to appear chopped off on the sides, make the canvas area larger in the icon (or cut and paste the icon contents into a larger canvas) before the select/feather operation.

Some darker icons may give you trouble with the Luminosity trick, but you can adjust the opacity to get the desired effect. You can also clone the layer and change the effect on the top to additive or something. Play around and you'll be amazed at the different kinds of effects you can make just from layering.

I did find you can do basically the same thing but use Value in the layer option, then play with the Transparency untill it looks good.

-Or-

If you use Color, your icon will have some color to it, but drop down the transparency and the colors will begin to fade and imho it looks a little better that way :)

With the GIMP, you can follow most of the same steps, but there isn't (in 1.2.3) a "Luminosity" layer option that Photoshop has. You can do something like it by cranking up the brightness and using filters->colors->colorify, but it's not quite the same. (at least I couldn't get it to look quite the same)
