Re: Namsa Door Turkey
In December of 1963, Zanzibar gained independence of a sort by installing a constitutional monarchy system of government. The new Sultan of Zanzibar was Arab, as were all the members of parliament. This arrangement lasted a mere month before the Zanzibar Revolution occurred. hotels in zanzibar
This bloody revolution resulted in the deaths of thousands of Arabs and Indians, with an estimated death toll of up to 20,000 people. Local Africans, frustrated that an Arab minority held so much power on the island, gathered together and overpowered the island’s police force. With the police disarmed, the revolutionaries took their weapons and marched to Zanzibar Town to overthrow the government. zanzibar hotels
The contingent of 600-800 revolutionaries succeeded in their task, ousting the sultan and his members of parliament. The leader of the revolution, a Ugandan by the name of John Okello, invited Abeid Karume to come and serve as Zanzibar’s first president. Okello himself remained on the island and branded himself a ‘Field Marshal’. Okello’s duties and powers were never clearly defined, which led to a power struggle between himself and Karume. zanzibar
Karume revealed himself to be a skilled politician who knew how to handle his enemies. The first time Okello left the island, Karume declared him to be an enemy of the state. Okello was banned from Zanzibar, and his demoralized revolutionaries did not fight the decision.
In April of 1963, Tanganyika, a mainland region which had just gained independence from German and British colonial rule, absorbed the island of Zanzibar into its government. One year later, the nation became the United Republic of Tanzania.
