Modules: Video Tube Prepares For Version 1.7

For beta testing purposes we have decided to make small incremental releases beginning with v1.61 and continuing through v1.69. Each release will contain bug fixes and some of the new features intended for Video Tube v1.7. By trying out these releases you are helping us to ensure the next production release is bug free.

These releases will be available for download at www.customvirtualdesigns.com

We are currently at version 1.61 which contains a couple bug fixes plus a really cool new Portable Video Preview feature.

The static video overlay used in the Search feature to preview a video prior to submitting has been replaced by a Portable Video Preview Overlay. You can define the overlay size, it's initial screen location, the window background color, border color and border size. The user can drag and drop the video preview to any desired location. It retains the last screen location and clicking another thumbnail while a preview is already playing simply closes the preview instead of causing errors like the original did.

This has been a great achievement for media (video in particular) presentation for XOOPS CMS as no other developer has made as simple and easy to take advantage of existing media sources. Great work tank1955.

May I suggest taking advantage of media content fromhttp://www.blinkx.com . This video search company searches all videos sources Youtube, veoh, metacafe, etc., etc. So they have indexed most if not all of exiting videos on the web. Why not base your project on this company instead of just Youtube.

Or maybe this can be a separate module. What do you think. They provide APIs, it would be worth a try. Again making XOOPS CMS irresistible for users.

I like the idea of the video wall (RSS video reader)and also people being able to make their submissions per category. Just an idea or can someone else work on this one?

I have 1.6 running on my website (http://www.alegria.org/ but I have noticed that this module does not intergrate with the search capabilities of Xoops. Is this on the list of enhancements slated for 1.7? Also, I noticed that if only 1 video is added to category the category is not dislayed in the category drop down. If you have more than one the category shows up in drop down.

I will use beta 1.61 and so on to give you feeback -- Nice work!!!

Can i recommend a future feature....

this module will be 100% useful if we can add manually video sites to the module. not just the defeault sites that come with this module. like youtube,metacafe...etc..

The blinkx site looks very interesting and I will try some experiments with it but it will be a different module. It appears a requirement to use their api is to sign up for a RedLabel account. I am trying to keep VideoTube free of any sort of account requirements.

I do like the VideoWall concept and will try creating something similar as a block in Video Tube.

Yes, I am planning to incorporate XOOPS site search for version 1.7.

As far as other video services, the key is what api functions are publicly available. I am currently reviewing dailymotion and google video. One example of what I mean is I have looked at MySpaceTV and found that videos can be embedded but there is no function currently available to search the videos from another site.

Version 1.62 is now available for download at www.customvirtualdesigns.com . Many new features added such as Video Tube now incorporates XOOPS site search. Three different Video Wall blocks are now available. Two more video display format options have been added. A Show All Categories parameter has been added to eliminate confusion regarding the 2 video minimum requirement. Number of videos in each category can now be displayed in the Category Select list.

I have loaded 1.62 and the search feature works and all categories are displaying. Thank Much. I have few callouts

1. View by Users seems to have same single video limitation found in category in that if only one video submitted by user, you can not navigate to their video (user has no link) in result page.

2. This is a big wish list item :) Allow users that submit video to delete or modify their content. I know a big one ;) I ask as many user will make errors and request changes or removal and this will burden the admin of the site.

Thanks for the feedback. Allowing users to edit or delete their own submissions is a great idea. I am currently working on v1.63 release and have just completed the addition of global comments. I will try adding the user edit functionality in this release as well.

I am working on the addition of a local description field in all submission forms. When the video is displayed in the embedded player I will look to see if a local description exists. If it does then it will be used. If it doesn't exist then the description retrieved from the video service will be used. The local description will always take precedence.

Does this sound like what you are looking for?

Another suggestion, there are many using x_movie and would like to convert to videotube, an import script would be much appreciated.

I rally like this module, thanks Tank!
A couple questions though (as if you don't have enough to do) would it be possible to: 1.Either have 3 or 4 different pages with different size screens to view the same video? or 2.Maybe a drop-down box with options to "view this video" in, let's say a small, medium or large screen?

I found pwidth and pheight but sure wish i could offer different views for my visitors.

Thanks for the compliment. I have been pretty busy trying to get all of my sites upgraded to XOOPS 2.3 but as soon as I finish I will start putting the request list together for the new features to add to Video Tube v1.8
