YAXS: Edmunds Enterprises Moves To Xoops With 2 New Modules

Edmunds Enterprises is proud to announce the successful migration to Xoops for their Linux Software and Hosting site, Edmunds Enterprises of America, Inc. This migration required the creation of 2 new custom Xoops modules:

- a full featured shopping cart module
- a complete Amazon eCommerce API implementation

These modules involved more than just wrapping the existing code with Xoops. Each was completely redesigned to be truly Xoops specific and leverage the great capabilities available to Xoops modules. We were able to increase functionality while simultaneously simplifying the code base by using such Xoops features as the built-in image manager, Smarty templates, comments, notifications, searching, and the many great Xoops object oriented classes that are available to module developers.

Congratulations to the Xoops Core developers for creating a very nice development environment with both form and function. Nice job guys! We can’t wait to see the roadmap items come to life in the months ahead.

Thank you for the kind feedback! We have been evaluating ways we might be able to release the cart module and make it available for others. Providing quality support is important to us and not something we take on lightly.

The Amazon module is a real bandwidth hog when the Google bots come trolling around but there aren't many modules available that create a steady revenue stream for your website just by installing them.

We have been evaluating offering both as free modules for the folks who are hosting their XOOPS site with us. I would expect a decision on that real soon. There is no reason the Amazon module alone wouldn’t easily return more than any hosting costs once your site is visited by the search engine bots.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do by any means. The modules are yours, and your decision on what happens to them. But I seriously hope you will consider releasing them under a GPL or similar license.

Think of it as returning something for the use of the excellent XOOPS platform if that helps put it into perspective.

I agree with dotmil regarding releasing the module under the GPL as it relys on GPL code. However, I am a business man myself, and I can respect wanting to recover some of your costs.

Regarding the bandwidth hog issue, a simple Disallow: /modules/module_name statement will solve that issue. The downside is that your shop won't get spidered. It's a tradeoff each person will have to make for themselves. Other modules, like calendars, have similar problems.

Maybe even a dual-license scheme like MySQL uses? Regardless, the cart module available in any form would be a huge asset to the XOOPS community.

Wow what a nice site. This cart module is really nice. It reminds me of all the carts people do with asp. Streamline to the point and no bloat.

I must say I would buy that module from you in a heartbeat. I would even pay a support charge for bug fixes and tech.
