Thanks, again for adding real substance and understanding to running a XOOPS website. Interestingly, One of the other factors you do not mention (here)is large volume of pages with similar content. I have a website with over 1000 pages of content and we enjoy very high ranking with google with certain keywords (alternative radical lifestyle) see HouseofStrauss at the top of the first page? Yeah, it's a tricky business 'guesing' what keywords searchers are using.

I use some of the tips and tricks featured on XOOPS tips n tricks website, so again THANKS to you all

Richard

tl,

I found your site very useful. I am looking at implementing short url (or similar) sometime in the future (once my site is finally online) and your article on this and other issues of interest to webmasters are very well written and informative. Thank you very much

Does ShortURL mess up current indexing?

biglove   Published 08/16/2005 19:47   Not too shy to talk   Joined 08/18/2004   Comments 157

Id' like to install the shortURL hack but I'm unsure if my currently indexed pages would be lost.

Any suggestions on how to archive currently indexed pages would be appreciated.

ShortURL or SimplfiedURL works like following:

for example, a real XOOPS URL
modules/news/article.php?storyid=100

simplified_url.php or xoops_shorturls.php would translate the URL into somthing like

news-article.storyid-100.htm
m-news+article+storyid-100.html

respectively

loadpage.php would then translate the transformed URL back to
modules/news/article.php?storyid=100

regular XOOPS URL will continue to work

If you were to implement a kind of ShortURL, your old URLs would continue to work. If SEs continue to crawl your site, then your regular URLs will be slowly replaced by shortURLs.

However, be warned and be really sure if you want to do that - Reversing back to regular URLs would create a big mess.

[edit]If you have an established site with thousands of indexed pages, you should probably not to switch. You may have duplicate content problem with Google, as Google is not very kind to content duplication.[/edit]

Shorturl seems to mess up Newbb2

biglove   Published 09/07/2005 20:20   Not too shy to talk   Joined 08/18/2004   Comments 157

I set up the ShortURL hack and the layouts of all my pages in newbb2 are completely jumbled up.

Is this a known issue or is there something wrong with the way I set it up?

ShortURL or SimplifiedURL transforms regular XOOPS URLs based on xoops_root or module_root. As you can imagine, there are problems with JavaScripts with both.

NewBB2 uses JavaScripts for navigation and it creates confusions for ShortURL. The transformed URLs ended up in the root directory instead of the newbb directory - because there is no module prefix to JavaScripts.
