Congratulations on this announcement.

Quick question, is there any plan to add a field to the image manager to include an ALT or Title tag?

Seems with all the talk in the forums lately about Search Engine Friendliness this must have come up.

Hmmm... I must admit that I just thought the nightly build was correct. It isn't.

I'll talk to our CVS guru about it and rectify it at earliest opportunity.

Xoops 2.1 will NOT include any modules apart from System.

@monster: a nighly build is the latest code, which developers are working on (may include substantial bugs, has some radical changes in the actual code, etc...); it's the truly bleeding edge, and not meant for people that are just interested in having a system up and running, but for those interested in the development process, especially those that want to help and contribute in the development process.

the ALT tag has little to do with search engine optimisation for me (the effect of the ALT tag for images on SEO is minimal, but not 0), but more with web standards compliance. And we aim to make XOOPS 2.2 output XHTML 1.0 Transitional compliant -at least.

Having said that, I'd like to extend the invitation Wanikoo has picked up in the forum, to make XOOPS's core web standards compliant.

Step 1a:
Core output will be made XHTML 1.0 Transitional compliant (done by wanikoo in the forums here)
Step 1b:
Core output will be made CSS 2.0 compliant (anyone willing to make this happen?)

Step 2:
Core output will be made Section 508 Accessibility standards and WAI accessibility standards compliant (anyone willing to take this up?)

Please use the sf.net XOOPS COre Patch Trackers to report what needs to be changed. That way we can monitor the necessary changes and it's progress.

It may have to wait until XooSphere as it will have to be an extremely flexible solution since it will be in the core but used in modules.
We will need to get it right the first time as it will be difficult to modify later.

...What Herko said, plus... When you have the alt tags in place and your website visitor hover's their mouse over an image, a nice little box shows the text in the Alt Tag.

I'm just thinking back to the hours and hours spent making sure that each Image had a relavent Alt tag prior to discovering and building sites with Xoops.

As I type this I notice that the "Powered By" images on the right column of Xoops.org have those tags.

That is correct. Skalpa has been hit by ISP trouble and therefore some things have been delayed, but we will publish more official plans for both 2.1 and XooSphere as soon as we possibly can

That is the correct branch.

The XOOPS Sourceforge project is the place to submit feature requests, patches and bug reports. However, I have pretty much settled on what I want in 2.1/2.2 - but if I'm really fast I might get a 2.3/2.4 out before XooSphere, or your idea(s) may be so good that I am persuaded to include it/them in 2.1/2.2

You are certainly addressing the right areas in my view. The custom user module and file manager are exactly what I need. Image manipulation and improvements to the image insertion interface would be good. Some niggles that I'm sure have been mentioned before and are not worthy of sf.net pages:

1) Delete All templates link for a module in custom template set
2) Extra l/c/r blocks below main section.
3) Easy insertion of custom links into main menu.
4) User able to choose group on registration
5) Page naviagation at the top of image insert page and 1 stage image upload - file manager will change all this

i just downloaded the nightly build from the link in the right hand block and it seems to download XOOPS 2.0.9.2??

i thought it might just be the version.php that hasn't changed, but have installed it and it actually is 2.0.9.2 or i see no difference.

will download directly from CVS later tho..

Unfortunately the package you have put here isn't 2.1 nightly,because there is no such file called recovery.php nor the version has changed. Also modules are included too. I think this package is actually 2.0.9.2.
I am really intrested for the new (and the real) package to be released!
Also if it is possible, I will be pleased if you can tell the persian cummunity for the new releases, so that we can have the package before supporting(this helps us to to support the persian users faster and better)!

According to our CVS guru, it should be rectified now.

The nightly build is an automatic cron job that takes the code from the 2.1 development branch on our CVS and the script had a minor error that made it take the code from the head branch - where 2.0.9.2's code lies.

As far as I can see, it is correct now.

@Brash: Those items you mention have never been a problem. You can and could do permission checks etc. without caring about cache messing it up. The problem was with e.g. the drop-downs in Newbb etc. since these could not be added to the template until after header.php was included - but if the page was cached, the processing would stop in the middle of header.php as the cached page was retrieved.

@Hulk: We are supporting Marcan in his work on a better multi-language that does not require processing very large texts to throw away most of its content

Sounds like my understanding of the caching system is a tad under par then . If the items I mentioned above have never been a problem, then why are you unable to set module and block caching for blocks/modules using them? For instance read counters for articles do not increment (immediately anyway) when module caching is enabled, admin only links appear to non admin users if the page is cached by someone with admin priviledges, and the main meny block shows menu items that the current user might not have permissions to depending on who was last to refresh the cache. I have a feeling I'm talking about apples when your talking oranges, but if these have not been a problem I wsa just wondering how you could go about setting up your XOOPS site so that these kind of items where never cached?

the output is cached, yes, but the permission check is done (and the user redirected if not permitted to view it), the view incremention is done. It just isn't displayed correctly with caching enabled (which kindof is also the point of using caching... that the content is cached and not re-calculated).

I have not done anything to solve the displaying of cached pages if they differ from one group to another. Yet!. However, I have made it so that at least the module header JS, stylesheets etc. can be correctly included even on cached pages.

PS. Sorry for missing your point about admin-only links. I saw permissions and incrementors - and they work fine.

Do you think there will ever be the ability to have components of a page that are able to be set so they never cache (obviously not in 2.X branch at all)? At present caching is done on a per block and per page basis, and a lot of the time there are components of that page/block that where the output is very rarely in need of updating, and others (as mentioned above) that need frequent updating. Just seems a bit of a waste to update cache on an entire block/page just to update the output of a handful of items.

I don't know how that would work, Brash.

However, I do plan to create the possibility of creating "cache groups" so you can have several versions of a page cached individually - such as article view for admins vs. article view for anonymous vs. article view for regular users. That should give enough flexibility for now, I think. Sometimes, there are just pages or entire modules that are not suitable for caching since they rely on per-user permissions (such as forums)

I downloaded the XOOPS 2.1 Nightly and I´m having some problems with it.

During the install part, he gives this error:

Resized Image
but if I push "Next" the instalation continues normaly. Then I have another problem:
Every time that I install any module, the module does not appears as an istalled module.

What I need to do?

What you need to do? wait for the next nightly build As stated above several times, this is a DEVELOPMENT version, things change daily, and it is not guaranteed to work every time (that's what it is for).

Thanks for reporting it tho Next time, can you report your server environment (server OS and versions, webserver and versions, database and versions, php and versions) as well as your client environment (operating system and browser, perhaps also if you're using a firewall software). This helps a lot in the debugging
