Restrictive file downloads in XOOPS?

Is there any way to post up publications in PDF format for people to read online, but to be able to restrict the file being downloaded?

Please let me know if this is possible. We are using LINUX with XOOPS 2.5.5.

I know that you can do it on SlideShare, but they do it by converting to their format, and then let the user download it, if the owner agrees to it.

This is best answer I found on StackOverflow, so maybe somebody could do it in XOOPS. But it wouldn't be me
