Why is it that you can't add users with a . in the user name in the User Profiles module, but it works perfectly fine in the standard XOOPS user registration?

In principle, there should be no difference, as the verification is done with the same routine according to the preferences. For which XOOPS version is this? Was the test done on the same site?

XOOPS version is 2.4.4. Yes, I did it on the same site. Sounds really strange if it utilizes the same function for validation
