how to config mail system?

how to config the "mail setup"? I wanna XOOPS send mail to users, Should I setup a mail system in the server?

I used 'php mail()', but it seems doesn't work, I have not recieve any mail.
if I chose 'sendmail', what should I do?
and use 'smtp auth', what should I do?

help me. thanks

for 'smtp auth':

* setup an email address on your server
* Path to sendmail: /usr/sbin/sendmail (will depend on your server)
* SMTPAuth username: your email address
* SMTPAuth password: your password

If I use the SMTP AUTH method as mentioned above, does the smtp server have to live on the same server/box as the site? Or can I use a url to another server that I have SMTP privileges on?

Yes, fill the host address in at SMTP host:
eg
mail.somehost.com
12.34.56.70
or with a port
mail.somehost.com:465
