500 internal server errors when updating articles

So I haven't made any changes to my install in months and now on certain articles I am not able to edit certain articles. When I try I get a 500 internal server error. I then tried to recreate the article and copied the content into notepad to remove any hidden code that might have been causing errors. I could not put in all the content at once. I broke it down and was able to get a few paragraphs before it started doing this again.

it wouldn't take any of the subsequent paragraphs when I tried to add each of them one at a time to see if there was a particular one causing the issue. Maybe its a character limit but this document is not that long and I'm sure we have longer articles.

This is not affecting all articles, just a few at this time that I know of but I can't find the what the common link would be.

Here is an existing article that I am unable to edit, all I wanted to do was move the link to the top and it won't take.

What is your XOOPS version, News module version?
What editor is used?
Did you change from editor?
Are the weird characters in the title intentional?
With copying, when using the right click javascript copy, the length may be limited. Try with ctrl-a, ctrl-c and subsequent ctrl-v.

I tried changing editor AFTER the errors began, didn't seem to make a difference so I went back.

Yes the weird title characters are intentional, several articles have those (its a simple way to track for now what articles we have reviewed and updated) and its not an issue with others.

The new document I created did not have the weird characters in the title.

I always do the CTL A, CTL C, CTL V. I even pasted to notepad first to make sure no code was being carried over.

Follow up... yes way late I'm sorry.

The issue ended up being some security mod on my server back end. My web host had to go through the text and get the back end team to fix whatever was triggering the problem.

I can try to get more specific details if anyone feels its of interest.

Ok here's the info:

"It's basically triggering mod_sec rules, meaning that we have to
manually whitelist some files and URL's because XOOPS and other
softwares use so many different ones. XOOPS is the only software which has needed it thus far."

I had issues with my articles module and my faq module kicking back these 500 errors on certain instances. I had to send the full text to my host so they could look it over and find the problem.

Seems your hoster did implement some rules that were too harsh for XOOPS.
What were these conflicting rules?
How can one know if one of these rules is giving problems ad causing the 500 error?

As far as knowing when it's giving the problems, from my end it wasn't affecting all existing articles. Some I could edit and others threw an error. When I tried to recreate the article by copy and pasting the text to a new article it would throw errors but I could create new articles with other content.

Host says:

Send them to http://www.modsecurity.org/, it's pointless me re-writing the whole thing.

We just use a default install.

I'm afraid the conclusion is time to shift hoster.

nah he's actually become a friend and I've hosted with him for many many years. I get excellent support from him. In this instance I don't know that he cares to go into all the detail since he corrected the issue and has no obligation to be of assistance to other XOOPS users.
