Problems installing

I installed the latest version of XOOPS and when I go to the index page I get this error:

This page cannot be displayed due to an internal error.

You can provide the following information to the administrators of this site to help them solve the problem:

Error: Smarty error: the $compile_dir '/xoops_data/caches/smarty_compile' does not exist, or is not a directory.

Backtrace:
/class/smarty/Smarty.class.php (1092)
/class/smarty/internals/core.write_compiled_resource.php (20)
/class/smarty/Smarty.class.php (1430)
/class/smarty/Smarty.class.php (1260)
/class/theme_blocks.php (141)
/class/theme_blocks.php (92)
/class/theme_blocks.php (36)
/class/theme.php (243)
/class/theme.php (73)
/header.php (66)

That directory is there, I do not understand why I am getting this error. :(

Have you checked permissions?

Re: Problems installing

I did all the permissions when I installed them. i was reading the installation thing as I was doing it and double checked, so I'm pretty sure they're where they're supposed be.

Have you set all the folders/sub-folders in your xoops_data folder to CHMOD 777?

Did the installation go okay.... no error warnings?

I had a problem upgrading when the "var path" wasn't being written to mainfile.php - can you check that your own mainfile.php has "xoops_var_path" (I think that's the name!) defined and, if so, is it correct?
