I would like to hack or mod the private message part as follows.

1. When a private message is received an email is sent to the user advising them that they have received a priavte message.

2. I only want the users who have subscribed to access the private messages.

e.g. allow or disallow group access to private messages.

I use the latter and can recommend it; almost like having a webmail system on your site.
