I can't help you directly with xoopsGallery but if you're having loads of trouble with the module then maybe you could consider trying a different gallery (if you haven't done so already)?
I narrowed my choice down to two:
1. ExtGallery (current version from
http://www.zoullou.net/)
2. xcGallery (latest version is 2.0.3)
Both worked first time and both are very good. I went with xcGallery but that doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with ExtGallery because there isn't
Indeed, the "lightbox" hack/feature is excellent and zoullou's support is usually good.
