We need several hacks urgently. We will pay for them.

1) News notifications need to go out at the time article is published rather than when it's submitted.

2) We need a single categorized notification subscription page for news and forums.

3) We need the ability to select multiple categories when submitting a news story.

4) We need to redirect people to the subscription page the first time they log in to the site.

ALSO: We need a URL option for news stories. IF a URL is added when an article is submitted, when people then click on the story it will take them to the external site with a top frame like the one in the links module. If there is no URL entered then they will just read the story on the site.

I would recommend speaking to Instant Zero (www.instant-zero.com) about customisation of the news module.
