Hi everyone,

not sure if this is the right point for my question ..

Is there a way to block access to the website for users that use an anonymizer to access the page ? Maybe via the IP-Filter ?
I ask because I know about very bad experiences with Forums and Guestbooks by other people who offer public Forums, and I want to reduce the risk.

Regards
Basco

Sure, you could just add the anonymizer IP addresses to the IP filter settings in the main XOOPS settings.

However, I would suggest restricting forums to registered users and ban users individually instead of banning a whole anonymizer IP. Anonymity is a right - not a crime!

Surely it is a right!
But when it is used to abuse a system it isn't a right anymore.

I see that you are from germany, too.
I think you know about actual court decision regarding responsibility of
webmasters for entries in the forums ?!

But the point is: You should not ban many users, if only some of them abuse your forum.

Secondly, at least in JAP there are at least 5 or 6 different Mix-Cascades and there are a lot of other anoymizing tools with other IP addresses. You will not be able to ban them all and everybody can use a free proxy server. You would have to ban half of the internet to really do it right.

I don't think think, this is very useful. You could of course try and hope that the idiots stay away then, but usually those idiots are not stupid, they just don't have social competences.

I agree with that and I don't want to block half the internet ... (there wouldn't be much traffic on the site and that isn't that what I want ) ...

But for a few "idiots" I know the anonymizer the normaly use (and in fact the "idiots" are always the same people).

Maybe it is possible to block only these two or three ranges.

It is possible, just enter the range in the block-IP-address field in the general XOOPS settings. The visitors with this IP address will simply get a blank page.
