I've searched to no avail. Why would smilies not appear correctly when previewing comments yet in post previews they do appear okay?

They also seem a little quirky in comments. When I edit a comment, my smilie will become html code and I need to check off the enable html check box at the bottom of the editor. Has anyone else experienced this with smilies?

This isn't a big deal for me but for the people who use the site, it might be. Can someone help?
