Why can't we upload files with .JPG or .GIF in Image Manager

Many times when trying to upload a picture file, the problem is that it needs to be .jpg or .gif in small letters, why is it that .JPG or .GIF aren't allowed.

And, if it makes no difference how do I go about allowing it.

This is in regards to the core Image manager

It's an old bug in the file manager. There's a fix here.

Older versions of Photoshop used caps for file extensions when saving files, so there are no doubt still a few .GIF files floating around.
