News module and smartsection

I've been trying to get the XOOPS spotlight function working on the news module. But for some reason, it continues to take the articles from smartsection instead of the news module. I've checked the items_spot.html template and this shows reference to smart section.

How do I go about pointing the XOOPS spotlight function to the news module?

Ignore this, my own stupidity. Clicked on the wrong block. But slightly confused, the news_block_template is blank?
