Fist, welcome to XOOPS!
To display a welcome message in your theme, add the following line in theme.html where you want the message to be displayed:
<b>Welcome: <{if $xoops_isuser}><{$xoops_uname}><{else}>Guest<{/if}></b>
Make sure you clear the contents of the templates_c folder after you make your changes or they won't take effect.
