Hey.
This is how I removed the icons completely.
open the following file:
../modules/tinycontent/templates/tc_index.html
You should see something very similar to this:

The
bold text calls the images/links.
I backed up the file, removed the
bold lines above and no longer have the icons for email and print AND there is no white space on my page. (my test site has a yellow background and there are no white areas where the icons used to be)
