Just FYI: Ports and referrer information are two different things. The referrer information is specific information sent by the web browser to the web server, that indicates the last page viewed by the browser. Ports are access points on a system for using different internet services, such as HTTP, FTP, SMTP, instant messaging, etc.
This does sound a lot like a referrer problem. The fact that you can login as him and modify the profile strongly suggests that it's something unique about his system that is causing the problem. It could even be that he is trying to login from work and his corporate network is stripping things out of the requests. You should have him try on:
1) a different computer
2) from a different physical location (ie: through a different internet connection)
If 1) is successful, it's a configuration issue on his PC.
If 1) is unsuccessful, but 2) is successful, it's a problem related to the 'net connection at that location.
If 2) is unsuccessful, then I'm really stumped, because you yourself can login as him and successfully do the changes, so if 2) is unsuccessful, then perhaps the same problem exists with two different computers he uses, or two different ISPs he as access to. But that seems unlikely.
Good luck,
