how to change default user group after registration ?

Currently, after user registered, user are assigned to default "Registered" user group. If I create a new user group call "Pending", how can i change the logic to assign this "Pending" user group to newly registered member ?

Please advise which file or setting i need to change.

Only way I can think of is by renaming the group "Registered User" in your groups to "Pending" and then make the changes you require to the permissions to that block then make another group Called "Registered" and set it to that I do not think there is any other way this is just the way I would do it.
