favicon.ico: How do you make them damn things?

I tried opening it up in The Gimp. No dice. I am obviously missing something. So, what am I missing?

I want to make new favicons for the three XOOPS sites I run.

Hi there
There's an online tool for that and a nice mini-how-to. I've used the IrfanView method (referenced in the how-to comments) and it's really easy (if you're running anything Windows)
