Using either phpkaox or, which I think I'm going to use,
karate_redux_blue, the site looks fine at res of 1024x768

However, some modules, at 800x600, like xfsection, when you go to read an article or submit(I think it's the same with newbb, xdirectory, etc.) the right column is pushed off the screen and a scroll bar appears at the bottom of the browser. I have agendax, xoogle, shoutbox in the right column.

I'm lost. Any ideas?

Most non-fixed width themes like those above have fixed width left and right columns, with the centre column making up the difference by percentage. If you have a module that specifies a fixed width for the centre column, you may go over the 800px. Maybe it would be better to have no right blocks in those module pages?

i agree with bassman here..

i would stick to a 2 column layout with 800x600 resolution.. and move to 3 column if u want ur site optimised for 1024 or higher..

in my opinion, i don't think the screen is big enuff at 800 resolution to warrant 3 column setups like this.. not without making the appearance look un-professional and all crammed up..

I have "NoClue" why, since for the most part xoops.org is a 3 column layout and seems fine on 800x600.

Anyway thanks for the light_red theme.

But if a guy wanted to hack the mods that mung the 800x600 res, what would he look for? I've tried looking at xfsections article.php file and all the references to tables are 100%

Nothing is set in pixels. I thought nested tables (not sure what I'm talking about here) worked at any screen res.

Re: Problems with 800x600 resolution

As mentioned, I think that most of the non fixed themes do set the left and right columns at a fixed pixel width and let the centre float. Mine does it that way. I do use 3 column for much of the site and drop to two for the Forums and News (left+centre), Photos (centre+right), and some others depending on what works best.

The side scrolling is usually from the content (centre or sides). Images, quoted code and the like are the culprits. When I grab a 500pixel Gallery image for a News item I usually need to trim it down a bit. (more/easier image control would be so nice).

Then it is personal preference. I prefer a non fixed width as it gives the user more flexibility and suits a community site with rapidly changing content.

Fixed width tends to allow a more professional look and higher end tricks but limits the user flexibility.

Either way has made me cringe or made me stay. Depends on your user needs and your content. I just don't like being forced to run a specific resolution and worst of all a specific browser or OS...

----------> To directly answer your question, I wouldn't be looking at the modules for fixes, it is the theme and what you put in for content, not how the module renders it (most of the time).

Think I'll go that way for the time being.

Going to try to work on a pure css site over time.

Thanks for all the feedback.
