You can use the blocks admin, use blocks already there or make custom ones.

admin ---> system admin ---> blocks

To display various blocks on your home page or other pages in your site.

Also remember group permissions too need to be set.

Admin ---> system admin ---> groups

You can change the selected module as your home page module, for example you may want the forums as your home page rather than news.

Admin ---> system admin ---> preferences ---> general settings

You will see a option in there to set which ever module you like as your home page.

You are only limited by your imagination
