Max - I would second that....

If you do want to change, Mambo would possibly be a better choice than PhpNuke.

Whos Mambo?
Anyway...

I think the main problem lies with my host, the whole
cPANEL is ****ed and they never respond to emails.

But I managed to get the permissions for public_html sorted!, i switched it to 777 on the cPANEL. (not FPT)
and then i uploaded a notepad file saying "Look at me, I can fly" and named it index.html, and put it in public_html, when i went into my site with explorer all i could see was the words "Look at me, I can fly".

Is this a good sign?
What do I do now to get the XOOPS installation to appear instead?
Tell me CHMODs please..

It certainly sounds like your host needs a kick up the bottom!

Well.. to be honest. XOOPS is the easiest ( in first installation ) compare with mambo and phpnuke. U only need to chmod 3 directories( if i`m not mistaken) one file. Mambo required u to chmod a lot of directories. Phpnuke don`t have to do anything. And.. when it comes to setting database. XOOPS and mambo can done it via web based installation. WHere phpnuke need to edit the config file manually. So i think still XOOPS got the advantages over mambo and phpnuke in installation. ^^

DO you got shell acesss ( ssh ) on your webhosting? Chmod will be easier to be done in ssh.

Shell access is also handy for learning about permissions, MySQL, etc.

Re: A Final Question before I go to PhpNuke

Just getting the installation page to appear in the browser does not demand any permissions to be set, so I am still rather stomped that you cannot see that one. Simply uploading the files and folders and going to your domain with your browser should at least provide that page.

Installing will need the database user and password as well as the three folders and mainfile.php chmodded to be writable, but that's all.

Max, I implore you to take someone up on the offer, you have received in so plenty a number, to install XOOPS for you. As someone else said, you can always change the passwords later (at least you should be able to)

In a previous post Max wanted video tutorials.

My host is onsmart.net, (the best around in my view) they provide video tutorials, just click on the links say for FTP, step-by step video instructions given.

Yeh thanks!
I'll take a look.

But can you tell me if being able to make a little text
appear on my site is a good sign? and my probelm now is XOOPS related?

By the way in these tutorials there is nothing about uploading XOOPS with an FTP, but ill try and find something similar, nice site!>

Good sign..:)

I would play all the ftp video's, get to know how to do it, the link called "managing your files" shows you how to CHMOD using SMART FTP and other FTP programs.
