MySQL is the database required to run Xoops

Hi MAX100

That's a good find with Supasshosting. I just took a good look around their site including their support forums. Lots of happy people there! I also note they use scripta V1.1 and XOOPS is a pre-install script.

I agree it looks a good deal and it allows monthly accounts which onsmart don't (if you want their best deal).

ok, but can you tell me what the thing is called where you can have a member login and accouts, like say is it called FTP accounts?
i need to known, because when i am searching for hosting companies i want to make sure they have alot of those!!

don't confuse FTP accounts and XOOPS users.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is for you to upload/download files to and from the webserver and you only need one for yourself. Anymore would be, if you have others, who should be able to upload files to a certain area of the server. This is NOT for the casual visitor or XOOPS user.

The amount of users, your XOOPS installation can have is only limited by the MySQL database... and it will take many thousand users before you reach any limit there, I'd say.

What do you need to use them for?

FTP Access would normally give you only one main user - and no reputable company will allow you annonymous ftp access (as it is prone to misabuse) - but there may be other alternatives such as webusers, password protected directories or other alternatives.

Thanks max100!

I was so impressed with the forum activity and hosting documentation that I have opened an account with surpasshosting. I have also been regularly checking their cpanel server status and note that it has been consitently UP with no heavy overheads. THis looks like a quality hosting company ... so far. I will post when I,ve explored a bit further.

it's cheap too
i'm not using much bandwidth yet with my XOOPS site,
only mp3's use some of it

surpass hosting looks pretty damn fine..

20,000mb of disk space and 200GB data/transfer (not bandwidth) per month is absolutely amazing for the price they're charging..

does anybody what the server speed is like?

Two questions.

1. I want a login box on my site and the abilty to have user accounts, what are they called?

2. Data transfer is not bandwidth?

Please reply to each question with detail, pretend i am a 2 year old baby.
