Is there a way to restrict groups from viewing certain categories within the download module?

Most of my downloads are for general distribution, and should be publicly accessible, but there are a few sensitive documents that only a handful of my users should be able to see the links to.

Is it possible to deny access to certain categories as you can with the Forums module?

Not with the normal mydownloads module. You should look for wf-downloads. I think its possible with this module.
