How to prevent timing out during uploads.

When using one of the two doenload modules w/ uploads (WF-Downlaods being one of them) how do I prevent users from timming out during large file uploads? Trying to uplaod a 5-10 or even 25 MEgs file on a 56K takes awhile. Im not saying this is the case all the time or even most the time but I would like to have this kind of flexability.
