Hello,

I have used computers for 7 years now and I know a lot. I am the guy who everyone comes to for help. I know a little of everything ranging from windows, to linux, to web programming ect ect. I just recently got a job offer for 30 an hour plus the option of more if I do well. I jumped on that as I can work it around my college schedule. ANyways, I want to get my certification just for, well grins and giggles. I want to know if there is a free place that I can do some sample tests to see how well preparred I am?

You could try Googling "A+ Test Prep". When I was getting prepared for my A+ I tried to find such resources. There are a few places out there that offer sample questions, but the quality of some is questionable.

If you really want to get ready for your cert, I suggest you go tohttp://getcertified4less.com/ and get one of their voucher bundles that includes test prep materials. There prices on voucher bundles with test prep materials is lower than anywhere else I've found.

Here's the package I got:
A+ Transcender Cert Pack - Pro
Transcender cert pack includes:
- A+CoreCert 3.0 (240 questions ) OR A+OS-Cert 3.0 ( 240 questions ) download from Transcender.com (Retail $119 each)
- One A+ test vouchers (Retail $145)

Their Price: $145.00

Combined, you're looking at $290 for the vouchers and the software. That's about the same as the vouchers alone just about anywhere else. You save $240.

Just a suggestion.

Transcender A+CoreCert 3.0 Study prep software - $119
Transcender A+OS-Cert 3.0 Study prep software - $119
A+CoreCert 3.0 Test Voucher - $145
A+OS-Cert 3.0 Test Voucher - $145
-------------------------------------------------------
Total if purchased individually $528
Total if purchased through getcertified4less.com as a bundle $290

Sorry I wasn't very clear about that.

You may find the vouchers for less somewhere else, but $290 for the vouchers and transcender is a heck of a good deal. The transcender software is excellent. When I went for my cert, I practice for about 5hrs/wk for a month with transcender and breezed my A+ exams.

Scores:
22/30 - Hardware
21/30 - Software

The test is adaptive. You must complete a minimum of 20 questions to pass. Depending on your answers, you can be asked up to a maximum of 30 questions. The closer to 20 you are, the better you did.

at $30/hr, you wouldn't have to work too many extra hours to make up for the excess expenditure. clock in some extra hours at work to buy it, you don't have to get it right now

your right, I havent started that job, I hope I do soon, I could use the money big time! But, I think I found what I needed from another friend of mine to help study. Now I just got to save up for the tests.

Has anyone taken the MCSE? That one seems quite a bit more hard. Although I did compelte and pass a windows 2000 MCSE prep course with an A, but that was like 2-3 years ago.

Yes, the MCSE is very difficult and very expensive. I don't have the exact figures off the top of my head, but it is quite a bit more than the A+. I'm getting ready to start semester 3 of my MCSE curriculum. A friend of mine took his MCSE last semester and got through, but he said it was even harder than the CCNA.

As far as software goes.... CompTIA just changed their tests last fall, so if your software is older than that, it's pretty well useless. The software I purchased was before the change, so it's not much use to anyone.

Best thing I can tell you on funding... a) work as much as you can at that good paying job and get some student loans. The pay increases you will get with each cert you obtain will more than justify the expense.
