JackJ: Sorry to correct you. He stopped at the stage of installing database. He has not finished the installation yet. Because, MySQL support was not compiled into php, XOOPS can't install the database.

If I may be so bold..

I'm new to this so I have to keep things in short mono-sylabic sentances so I don't get confused :)

I think this should technically read 'xoops can't CREATE THE TABLES' yes/no? Since, as far as I can tell, it is I who have to create the database, not xoops, and then let XOOPS build the tables. Is that correct?

Yes. I meant tables not database. A good one.

You make an excellent point. It should be a relatively simple matter to test for mySQL with a simple bit of code. The current installation PHP script is quite good, probably only needs to be extended to include this condition.

Just to say,

I ran into a similar problem and the issue was my ftp client was set to convert file names to lower case

So, say, "Smarty" was converted to "smarty"...
