so i have loaded my template and my news section is using it, but how can i get the whole site to use the template? its still showing the standard XOOPS template for the rest of the site, i have 2 themes to select from which i believe are the defaults

I think you are confusing themes and templates with eachother. When you load a template (either upload or clone) and set it to default in settings, it is used in your entire website. Unless you use some hack, the same goes for the themes. You can select just one theme (also in main settings).

Mayby you could shed a little more light on what you did and what you are trying to achieve.
