Smarty templates png alpha support

I have just recently been looking to use png with alpha chanels in my design and came across [this] and wondered if and how this could/would apply to xoops.
I know most browsers are fine but there is still a bug with ie that this fixes?

I believe XOOPS use Smarty 2.5.0 - working on 2.6.1 - so if the function is in Smarty 2.5.0, you can use it in XOOPS.
