I replaced these files:

MODULES/NEWS/xoops_version.php
MODULES/NEWS/ADMIN/index.php
MODULES/NEWS/ADMIN/storyform.inc.php
MODULES/NEWS/INCLUDE/storyform.inc.php
MODULES/NEWS/LANGUAGE/main.php
MODULES/NEWS/LANGUAGE/main.bak
MODULES/NEWS/LANGUAGE/admin.php

i replaced them with what i thought would turn it into a calender, i got the calender off the german site so got a bit confused.
could someone please send me these files so i can use the news again.
and send me in the direction of an english calender i can install.

You can download XOOPS off this site and just replace the files yourself

A good calendar module is Agenda-X - search for it in the downloads here.

should i reinstall the whole thing?

if so how can i backup my data.

if you have access to phpmyadmin access your database and delete the tables that refers to xoops_news that way you can reinstall the module. usually pypmyadmin can be accessed by cpanel if you have access to it, once you click on the icon 'mysql databases' at the end of that page there's a link to phpmyadmin
