heres a stupid question

what are all the subdirectories that the standard xoops icon.ico is stored in?

I have my own icon.ico and I have put it in every subdir I can think of

In the backend my icon.ico appears in the taskbar

but in the front end the xoops icon.ico appears.

If you are talking about the icon in the tab, then it is favicon.ico and it is stored in the main directory. Some themes have it also in their directories. Just search for favicon.ico

Please note: it might take a while before it will be reflected in the tab, or you need to clear the browser's cache

I said "browser's cache" not "XOOPS cache"

You might try this:

1. type in "your site URL"/favicon.ico
2. push enter
3. ctrl+f5
4. done
5. Restart Browser

If you have replaced all favicon.ico, and clear browser's cache, then try another browser and see if it picks up correctly. Or ask a friend to check it for you.

Sometimes it is set correctly, but your browser is still keeping it in its cache.

i had the same problem, XD and stressed the hell out of me, and it was just that some browers act very strangely with favicon caching, here are my tips

just do a source view of your main page and Ctrl+F for "favicon" to find the favicon url, if you already changed it then access that url and give f5 some hits till its refreshed then it will change in website page, generally the theme favicon is the one overriding all so you just need to change those in it.

Been there, done that many times. Be sure you replace all favicons, also at theme level, and have patience. I have experienced it can take one or two days before all browsers show the new icon.
