you are arguing an opened account with posts/messages against an account that was never activated

a good xoops owner controls their website and deletes spammers

a bad xoops owner that doesn't care, lets everyone and anyone on to do what they want

I'm proposing apples, you're arguing oranges

@ chefry:
dont take my suggestions personal i just want to share my experiences. with you.
1- I just advise about what to do against "bad users (spams)" not inactive or active users. when a webmaster think a user is bad or spam, he should do some actions that will be reversible. because once you delete some accounts there is no way to back if you made mistake.

2- so what to do against inactive users:
yes you can delete them and it is not very important. 6 years ago I deleted those accounts just like you but now i didnt. because i think why I (or other webmasters in my website) bother myself and waste my valuable time to delete inactives, when there is a chance for them to be active users in a long time period? once they turn to active users I will do my best to recognize bad users.

When I say "inactive users" I mean users who's accounts have not been activated by the webmaster

When you say "inactive users" you are talking about people who have not been actively posting on your website

again, I'm proposing apples, you're arguing oranges

When you got to "Find Friends" in the admin panel, it shows you "inactive users". That's a list of users that have registered but have not been approved by the webmaster. Not a list of users that have not been posting.

So maybe the confusion is in the word "Inactive". Maybe it should be changed to "Unactivated"

In any event, I still think it is a good idea to have a semi-automated method of deleting "Unactivated" users and moving them to the "Enter emails that should not be used in user profile" in the Preferences Main »» User Info Settings

@ chefry:
I understood you well.
Inactive users have an explicit definition in xoops.
they are those that in _users table has 'level' field equal to 0
so for example you can change a "user level" from active to inactive in profile module.
but we are talking about those inactive users that never activate and never login in.
some webmasters like you may decided to active them manually but others like me let new users to be active by an automatic process (click on an activation link)
so we are talking about the same thing.
you review all inactive users and delete those you think are bad or spam and activate others manually. (seems you have many times to do all these manually )
previously I wrote an script to delete all inactive users who dont be active ( dont click on activation link) for more than XX days.

Now I changed my mind and I didnt delete them (even when they dont be active after 3 years) because I hope they be active someday .

I don't "think" i know if they are a spammer

you don't need to be rocket scientist to figure out in most cases that the "unactivated" user is a bot. and if i have a doubt, i check further.

And I didn't suggest a script to automatically delete users. What I suggested was a simple admin side option to move the email address of an "unactivated user" from here to there, instead of always having to do it manually. Better to fix the problem before it starts, rather than review every comment, delete what's necessary and later ban the user.

if you want a website with 15,000 user comprised of 14,950 unactivated bots and 50 regular users, then go for it. have fun.

sorry but I don't want a million posts in my forums and articles for penis enlargers, viagra, forex, investment opportunities or please to help me move my millions from nigeria

I've been using Xoops and these forums longer than any of you, including Mamba, and quite frankly I'm getting sick and tired of being $hit on every time I post a comment or idea. If you don't like an idea, fine don't use it.

@ chefry:
You can act against inactive users i didnt argue that.
As you know an spam bot/user will be active and submit spam posts right after registration so those accounts that are not active in a long time are not spams and therefore i have not many inactive accounts in my website.

I just show you a better way to act against bad users/bots whether they are active or inactive.
you can close their accounts privilege to a non permission group and the bot can visit website but didnt understand what happens. Also the bot cannot use that email for second registration.

but based on my experiences when you delete a bot/user account and ban its email the bot understand it very soon and will register again with another email. (you just will have more trouble)

I know many people in xoops just close bot/spam accounts instead of deleting them because it has many advantages that i described above.
I hope you understand me.
