I did a fresh install of xoops 2.5.5 on my shared host. Everything seemed to work fine so far. As i installed "eforms" and submitted a form, i got the above error. To check, if it's a core oder module problem, i tried to register as new user and no mail was sent to.

I tried several settings. Sendmail also didn't work and with SMTPAuth all sent mails have been eaten by the spam filter. I also switched between differnt PHP-versions from 5.2.x to 5.3.x with no result.

My last attempt was to copy the complete /class/mail folder from a working xoops 2.5.1 to my 2.5.5 installation and - whoops! - it works!

So, what can be the problem here? Debug mode brings up no error. What are the main disadvantages using this "old" version of phpmailer class?

Did you also try replacing /class/mail with freshly downloaded 2.5.5 files?

Yes. I downloaded Xoops 2.5.5 from another source and copied the complete /class/mail folder. But it didn't work too.

Additional info: Two other Xoops Websites are installed and running on the shared host. Both are older Xoops versions and running fine!

Its very strange.
try to download the full package of xoops 2.5.5 and replace all files not only class/mail

I have at least 4 website with xoops 2.5.5 and there is no problem with xoopsMailer function.
one of them is php 5.2 and others are php5.3

Hmmm ... there are no other problems in my xoops installation except phpmail. No debug errors, no missbehaviour. Why copy files, which are not affected?

/class/mail files are all exchanged, which one could be affected to?

With the help of alfred the problem could be solved. I had to turn OFF the SAFE MODE!

Hope this information can help other useres with similar problems.

I have the same problem. I replaced the folder class/mail/phpmailer of xoops 2.5.5 with that of 2.5.1 and everything works. My SAFE MODE is already OFF.
If I put the folder back to phpmailer of xoops 2.5.5 returns the error in sending email

Try temporarily enabling php error reporting to all and see if the log doesn't reveal more. Don't forget to turn it off after you are done.
