xampp/wamp/wampserver stopped working?

My xampp installation stopped working after a Windows update. Couln't get the thing working even after a reinstall

However, I've found this post on the wampserver forums which I thought I'd share in case others are in the same boat:

The Micro$oft Exec who signed this off should be nailed to the office door by his man-tackle

Haven't tried the solution yet, but symptoms are the same so I'm hopeful

I recently had this issue with my wamp install... It was Windows Defender which decided after 2 years to look for and change localhost directives in my hosts file.

Its an easy fix open the following file:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and make sure you have at least this directive for localhost:
127.0.0.1 localhost

Yep - you also need to comment out the ::localhost entry like this:

# ::localhost


From what I've been able to deduce (Google is your friend!) it is only a problem with Windows Vista and occurred with an automatic update on or around 10th/11th March 2009.
