I figured it out....
I'm using Blue Shine as a theme, which has it's own templates for News 1.63

So to get rid of it, you have to find news_item.html in the theme>modules>news directory

And remove the line

<td class="itemHead"><h2><span class="itemTitle"><{$story.title}></span></h2></td>
