in trying to update gives me this error:

"This page cannot be displayed due to an internal error.

You can provide the following information to the administrators of this site to help them solve the problem:

Error: Smarty error: the $compile_dir 'XOOPS_VAR_PATH/caches/smarty_compile' does not exist, or is not a directory."

Did you follow the instructions?

You should have following directory in your XOOPS installation:

/xoops_data/caches/smarty_compile

and it should be set to 777

update without problems ... but the module xlanguage does not work, said commencement:

the config file can not be created: XLANGUAGE_CONFIG_FILE

I am having the same issue as the OP, but I'm upgrading to 2.3.0Final. I have the folders as stated on my server, and they are writable. It is still giving me that error.

I'm upgrading from 2.0.18.0 to 2.3.0 Final. I'm not sure what the issue is, but now my production site is down and I can't get it back up (unless I use a backup).

I am having the same issue Frank. Same upgrade. Same error and my site is down site 5:30pm yesterday.

I have all the files in place so far as I can tell after running the checkfile. I have my permissions right.
