I dislike new cache directory structure in XOOPS 2.3.x. Why XOOPS 2.3.x need to use /xoops_data/caches instead of /cache like all previous version ? I believe we need to maintain same directory structure except truly needed. Could someone explain to me ?

not an official answer but

since it has both templates_c and cache folders in there. so it should be called caches. for me i've always hated moving two folders (cache , templates_c), now they are bundled together and one change in mainfile would be needed (instead of 3 or 4)

I still think better to retain same directpry stucture will al previous version in order to retain uniformity.

I really hope any core developer (phppp) can answer this question.

for security reason, those 2 directories have been added, replaced some old ones, and as explained, you can now locate them anywhere you want, and rename them.
Why don't you like that? uniformity will now be those 2 directories, as well like in 3.0 branch

since when has templates_c been a cache folder?

templates_c is the smarty compiled templates folder. hence templates_c for templates_compiled.

therefore templates_c does not belong in a cache folder.

yes and what?

i will rephrase that.

templates_c is not a cache folder, so why is it being placed inside a cache folder?

also why are you adding new features to an RC release?

this is not good practice, and i myself would not consider this to be an RC version because you have added new features.

please follow consistent procedures. add new features at the alpha stage, bug test in beta stage or at very latest add new features in beta stage. but NEVER add them to an RC release.

Marco.. your explanation does make sense.

Actually I never move my cache or template_c to other directory since i didn't see any need to do that, but after hear your explanation, maybe I need to agree to the certain extend.

However, what's the different having cache to be hidden in external directory to ensure the security but we have mainfile.php which contain very critical information, open to the world ?

From my opinion, if we really need to move our code to external directory in order to ensure the security, i believe we need to start with mainfile.php. Do I say the right thing ?

Don't get me wrong when I open this thread. I don't want to argue with anyone... just to get better understanding about XOOPS decission, learning from expert and sharing opinion.

Actually, we recommend to remove the critical information from the mainfile.php as well. See here...
