My hosting company automatically installed XOOPS 2.0.16 in my account. When I told them that the latest version is 2.0.17.1, they said that the automated updater for the latest version has not been released yet and I should wait for that. They said if they install it manually, I won't be able to receive automated updates manually.

Is this information accurate? Is there anything I should know about using the 2.0.16 (security, patches, etc.)? Thanks.

are you saying that i should update it myself? my hosting company suggested that i wait for the automated update to come out. the person said if he installs the latest version manually right now it will not work with future automated updates.

The truth is hosting companies have got plenty of such scripts to track for a new version.
Do it by yourself and dont wait for them, there are many important security updates in 2.0.17&2.0.17.1 and now as you can see there is 2.0.18RC. You should go to 2.0.17.1, and when 2.0.18 become final-update to it.

If your hosting company is using a script like Fantastico, you will always be way behind in upgrades.

The advantage of fast server-side installs with Fantastico and others is far outweighed by the disavantage of never being closer than about 3-6 months to the latest upgrade.

So, yes the information you received is accurate in that once you take 10 minutes to manually install you will never be able to do a 1 minute automatic install/update. For programs that rely on frequent updates, my response to that would be "So what?"
