How about cloneable blocks?

Hi,

GiJoe blocksadmin module gives you clone for blocks (at least in XOOPS 2.0.13)

I've tried that and SmartBlocks, too, and can't get either of them to work. I wonder if anyone is using it successfully on 2.0.17? If so, then I will try again.

Hi again

I just tested it(blocksadmin) on 2.0.17 and it works.

Do you add in xoops_version.php for the block you want to clone:

$modversion['blocks'][X]['can_clone'] = true ;//Clone Block

where X is the block number?

Quick work! Thanks. Much appreciated. And no, I don't think I did. Must have missed it. I'll try again later and post the result.

Here's a thought, though: Will blocks cloned this way still be viable if and when we upgrade to a version of XOOPS which has clonability built in?

Apparently Altsys 0.55a now includes myblocksadmin. That's what I had tried. What version were you using that worked?

Hi,

I'm using hacked version of blocksadmin 0.33. Hack is only because I have multiblock hack and wanted to manage all my blocks with blocksadmin.

Myblocksadmin is again from GiJoe too, but this is a library for developers to add block management functions to the admin part of their modules.

guys. Clone Block Easily - Great Tut by MadFish.

All a cloned block is, is a modified xoops_version.php and modinfo.php. As soon as these files are overwritten your block disappears.

I don't see why you would need this built into XOOPS when all you have to do is copy/paste a few lines of code.

First of all, thanks for the reminder. That's a great tutorial.

There are several reasons:

1. The one you mentioned above. Extra steps on upgrade to see that your blocks are not overwritten. That's enough by itself, but there are others.

2. It may be fairly easy to do, but it's time consuming and an extra step every time we want to clone a block. As site administrators, do we really need extra steps and extra stuff to keep up with? I know I don't.

3. I would wager that 90% of Xoopsers are not going to want to tinker with the code this way. Do we really want XOOPS to be only for techies?

IMHO, it should be in the core as it was with 2.2. To not have it would be to take a giant step backwards, and that's not what XOOPS is about.

Thanks and regards,
Jere

Valid Points, Personally I think that XOOPS needs the ability to add custom pages without requiring a module.

Integrating the functionality of a content module into the core. Or using the node/1 node/2 etc approach as Drupal does.

We don't necessarily have to call them nodes. Hell, <{$xoops_url}>pages/<{$pagetitle}> would be fantastic.

Think about how much content you could create without requiring a module. That would truly open up the possibilities.
