How can the site named be removed from the page titles? Is is a big job?

open your theme.html and see in first lines of meta in the header:
<title><{$xoops_sitename}> - <{$xoops_pagetitle}></title>
...the smarty for site name is self explanatory

While your messing around with the title tag, here's an article well worth reading -http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors#f3. Most of the industry's top experts on SEO give their opinions about which factors are most important and why.

They also offer a book on SEO you can download from their site.
