"Not Writable" problem with Sourceforge Web Services and Xoops

I am "trying" to install XOOPS for the MPhlak site which is hosted on Sourceforge.net but during install I keep getting an error that the directories are not writable (cache, templates_c, uploads, mainfile.php) despite them being writable to the best of my knowledge.

I uploaded everything and used GFTP to chmod those directories to 777 and mainfile to 666 and tried again. No dice. So I logged into the shell and used chmod to change the permissions. Redid the install, same deal.

From the way it looks, the files are the proper permissions so I am wondering why the install is saying they are not.

Is there a way to manually install? Is this a known bug? I am not good with PHP or PHP scripts.

you can manually install by injecting the sql, and modifying your mainfile.php.

However if the installer is having issues seeing that those directories are writable. XOOPS itself will have the same problems.

those directories have to be 777 for XOOPS to function. weird problem.

that's the odd thing, the directories are 777 and the mainfile is 666... that is why i do not get it.

ive seen XOOPS installed on various sourceforge project sites so i'm sure it can be done which is why im asking here because google gives no ideas on how to solve this problem.

later i will try a manual install and see if it works.

now if im not mistaken, those permissions look right for installing....

perhaps its an ownership issue

try

chown -R user.group /home/yourdomainprefix/public_html/

yea its the right ownership to the best of my knowledge.

im thinking it may be a bug in the installer that is incorrectly telling the installer that the directories are not writable.

then again i cant say for sure as i know little about php or web servers. im more knowledgeable with linux and the core of linux.
