This is a screen capture of part of a table created in a spreadsheet application:

Is there any way to display text diagonally like that using standard HTML and CSS?

There could be some ways of acomplishing this:
using javascript

you could also try a combination of imagestring and imagepng

Do the angle specifications really work?

The Javascript looks handy. I'll try that.

And I can fall back on dynamically generated images if needed.

Someone else told me about the writing-mode CSS attribute, which can produce vertical text, although it's IE-only.

The way I understand it Dave is that technique does not work in modern browsers (including IE) I thought that it stopped functioning after 5.0
