what version of xmspotlight are you using?
the news that is shown in the block is dependent on the user's permission for that category and also if the article's 'Publish in Home?' is set to yes . so check those. and if there are any messages in phpdebug.
and also.
the latest version was released last month. (
xmspotlight_09212k7.zip)
you will have to uninstall the old one (and delete the files) and upload the new one (or there would be some extra files laying around) .
