Since:

Had a question from a friend who's using a version of XOOPS which is older than 2.016

There's a 2.0.16 to 2.0.17 upgrade download on sourceforge but nothing else other than the full package.

Does my friend need this full package and how easy is the upgrade? Is it a simple matter of overwriting files, running an upgrade script and updating the system module as for the 2.0.16 upgrade?

What version does your friend have?

A possible upgrade path is 2.0.14 -> 2.0.16 -> 2.0.17 by using the available upgrade packages from SourceForge.

Probably you or your friend just can overwrite all files except mainfile.php. You or your friend can test this on a test server first.
You only have to be carefull with files that have been hacked (ie. footer.php / header.php) for special purposes.

The 2.0.16 - 2.0.17 upgrade package includes upgrade scripts for 2.0.13+. If you need to upgrade an older version, you will need to use the full package, or get the site to 2.0.13 and then use the upgrade package.
