Any tips on configuring smtp?

I'm using gmail, a no-ip domain name and have tried every combination of email settings I can think of, including changing the "from" address in general settings and changing the server name in auth. options.

Problem started with activation emails generating errors, but as I test the error everytime now is "from address failed" Debugging gives me no other errors to work with. Any ideas???
