I currently have XOOPS installed in a sub directory on my website and I was wondering if it's possible to move XOOPS from the sub directory to the root directory ?? or am I just asking for trouble trying to do this.

its no problem, all you have to do is move all files to root dir and then in mainfile.php change 2 things:
XOOPS_ROOT_PATH and XOOPS_URL
